A Wine Journey Through the Dolomites & Friuli

15-23 Sep 2027

9 Days • 8 Nights • Val Gardena • Alpe di Siusi • Alta Badia • San Cassiano • Collio • Ruzzis di Sotto • Venice

Hike the dramatic peaks and high meadows of the Dolomites by day, and spend your evenings with some of northern Italy's finest wines. This 9-day journey follows the September harvest from the alpine vineyards of South Tyrol to the rolling hills of Collio. There you'll stay at a family winery and taste with the producers behind the bottles.

Trip Overview

Your journey begins with a drive from Venice into the mountains, stopping on the way at Hofstätter in Termeno, one of South Tyrol's historic wine estates. From there, you'll settle into Ortisei, a charming village in Val Gardena, for three nights. Cable cars and a funicular take you straight from the village to Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high-alpine meadow, and to the Resciesa plateau. You'll walk easy, scenic trails beneath the jagged Sassolungo and Odle peaks. A tasting at Gump Hof, a small family winery set among vineyards beneath the Sciliar, shows how wine is grown in the shadow of the mountains.

Next, you'll cross Passo Gardena on foot into Alta Badia, the heart of Ladin culture in the Dolomites. Here you'll hike to the Santa Croce sanctuary at the foot of the vast Sasso di Santa Croce wall, then sit down to a traditional Ladin dinner at a mountain farmhouse. You'll also wander the open Pralongia plateau, with views across to the Marmolada glacier. Your final evening in the mountains is spent in Cocun, the wine cellar at Ciasa Salares, which holds one of the most remarkable collections in the Alps.

The journey ends in Friuli's Collio, a region of gentle hills and neat vineyards on the border with Slovenia, famous for its white and orange wines. You'll stay at Schiopetto, a pioneering Collio estate, with a cellar tour and tasting just steps from your room. You'll hike up Monte Quarin for sweeping views over the wine country, then have lunch at Osteria della Subida, a much-loved address for Friulian cooking. To finish, you'll taste at Radikon, one of the world's most celebrated makers of skin-contact wines.

Gump Hof and both Friulian estates are partners of our sister company, Italian Wine Club, which imports their wines to Singapore. So this is more than a tour: you'll be welcomed as friends. Join us in September 2027 for the best of the Dolomites' trails and Italy's northeastern wine country.

  • On arrival in Venice, meet your driver for the private transfer north into the Dolomites (about 3 hours 20 minutes of driving).

On the way, stop for two hours at Hofstätter in Termeno, one of South Tyrol's historic family wine estates. Here you'll learn about the region's winemaking traditions over a tasting of its best-known wines, including the Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer the estate is known for.

Continue up into Val Gardena, a valley framed by the Sassolungo, Puez and Sella massifs. Val Gardena is famous for its woodcarving tradition, which goes back to the 17th century, and for its blend of three cultures: Italian, South Tyrolean and the native Ladin. You'll see it on every signpost, written in Italian, German and Ladin. Settle into your hotel in Ortisei, the valley's most charming village and your base for the next three nights.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Ortisei, Val Gardena (Hotel Cosmea or similar family-run 4-star alpine hotel)
    Meals: Dinner at the hotel

  • After a morning briefing with your guide, ride the cable car straight from Ortisei up to Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm). At 1,700–2,000 m (5,577–6,562 ft), it is Europe's largest high-alpine meadow: rolling pastures dotted with wooden hay huts, with the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto rising on one side. Ahead, the vertical walls of the Sciliar (Schlern) massif rise to 2,563 m (8,409 ft). They are the remains of an ancient coral reef, and their sheer walls are one of the defining images of the Dolomites.

Choose your pace for the day. You can take a gentle stroll between mountain huts or a longer loop across the plateau, with your guide adapting the route to the group. In September the pastures turn golden and the light is soft and clear. Return to Ortisei by cable car.

In the afternoon, a private transfer takes you down to Gump Hof, a small family winery in Novale di Presule. Its steep vineyards sit beneath the Sciliar, and the visit and tasting show how wine is grown in the shadow of the mountains. Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Hiking: 1–6 hours, depending on how far you wish to walk
    Accommodation: Same hotel in Ortisei
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at a local restaurant

  • Meet your guide in the hotel lobby and take the funicular from Ortisei up to the Resciesa (Raschötz) plateau. From there, hike up to the summit at 2,281 m (7,484 ft), marked by a large wooden cross. Steep slopes of crumbling rock fall away towards Val di Funes, and on the other side lies one of the finest views of the Odle peaks. Horses often graze the high pastures here.

Continue to a mountain rifugio for a relaxed lunch on the terrace, then walk back to the funicular and ride down to Ortisei.

Hiking: about 2.5 hours, 8 km (5 miles), 240 m (787 ft) up and down
    Accommodation: Same hotel in Ortisei
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at a traditional local restaurant

  • Today you cross from Val Gardena into Alta Badia on foot. A short private transfer takes you to Selva, where the gondola carries you up to Passo Gardena (2,121 m / 6,959 ft), on the edge of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. This protected area covers more than 10,700 hectares (over 26,000 acres) and takes its name from the Puez peaks and the jagged pinnacles of the Odle.

Follow an easy, level trail with the huge walls of the Sella massif beside you, towards lunch in a rifugio at the foot of Sassongher. After lunch, walk down through the meadows to the village of Colfosco and on to Corvara.

A short transfer takes you to your hotel in Alta Badia, your base for the next three nights. Your luggage will be waiting for you.

    Hiking: about 3 hours, 9.1 km (5.7 miles), 75 m (246 ft) up, 670 m (2,198 ft) down
Accommodation: 4-star alpine hotel in Alta Badia (Hotel Marmolada, Hotel Col Alto, La Majun, Ciasa Salares or similar)
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at the hotel

  • Meet your guide in the hotel lobby for a short transfer to San Cassiano. From the village, your trail climbs through the "viles" of Val Badia. These small hamlets of old timber farmhouses and barns with shingle roofs are unique to this Ladin valley, and many are still lived in and farmed today.

After about two hours you reach the Santa Croce sanctuary (2,045 m / 6,709 ft), a small pilgrimage church set at the foot of the vast Sasso di Santa Croce wall. The rifugio next to the church is a classic spot for a mountain lunch. Don't leave without trying Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy torn pancake served with powdered sugar and berry jam. Return to San Cassiano along the same path.

In the evening, a private transfer takes you to Maso Runch, a centuries-old farmhouse where the family serves a traditional Ladin dinner made with produce from their own farm.

Hiking: about 4–5 hours, 12.6 km (7.8 miles), 516 m (1,693 ft) up and down
Accommodation: Same hotel in Alta Badia
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at Maso Runch

  • Meet your guide in the hotel lobby and head up to the Pralongia plateau, on foot or by lift, depending on your energy. This wide, rolling high plateau is one of the great panoramic balconies of the Dolomites. Around you rise the Sella, the Conturines and Sasso di Santa Croce, while Marmolada (3,343 m / 10,968 ft), the "Queen of the Dolomites" and home to the range's largest glacier, stands to the south. Several rifugios along the way are perfect for a long lunch in the sun.

In the evening, a private transfer takes you to Ciasa Salares in San Cassiano, for a tasting in Cocun, its remarkable underground wine cellar. Dinner follows in the hotel's restaurant, a fitting farewell to the mountains.

Hiking: 1–6 hours, depending on how far you wish to walk
Accommodation: Same hotel in Alta Badia
Meals: Breakfast, tasting and dinner at Ciasa Salares

  • Leave the mountains behind with a private transfer to Capriva del Friuli, in the Collio wine region on the border with Slovenia (about 4 hours of driving). Check in at B&B Al Pompiere, set among the vineyards of Schiopetto, one of the estates that shaped modern Collio winemaking.

Set off on a scenic circular walk through neat rows of vines and gentle rolling hills, with views out over the Gorizia countryside. September is harvest time here, when the vineyards are at their busiest and most fragrant. Back at the estate, enjoy a guided cellar visit and tasting of Schiopetto's wines. Dinner is at a restaurant nearby.

Hiking: about 2.5 hours, 8 km (5 miles), 170 m (558 ft) up and down
    Accommodation: B&B Al Pompiere, Schiopetto
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at a nearby restaurant

  • Meet your guide for a 15-minute transfer to the quiet woods of Bosco di Plessiva. From there, a circular trail climbs towards Monte Quarin, with sweeping views over the vineyards of Collio and, on a clear day, as far as the Julian Alps.

Afterwards, linger over lunch at Osteria della Subida in Cormons, a much-loved address for traditional Friulian cooking. In the afternoon, cross to the hill of Oslavia for a tasting at Radikon, one of the world's most celebrated makers of skin-contact "orange" wines. Dinner tonight is at a restaurant near Al Pompiere.

Hiking: about 3 hours, 7.5 km (4.7 miles), 330 m (1,083 ft) up and down
    Accommodation: B&B Al Pompiere, Schiopetto
Meals: Breakfast, dinner at a nearby restaurant (lunch at La Subida not included)

  • After breakfast, take the private group transfer to Venice airport (about 1.5 hours).

    Meals: Breakfast

Many Shades and Shapes of the Dolomites

At dusk the pale rock glows pink and orange, a moment the Ladin people call enrosadira. Every hour of the day brings a different side of these mountains.

What We Love About the Dolomites & Friuli

Trails for every pace. Cable cars and funiculars lift you straight onto high plateaus and panoramic ridges. You decide whether to stroll between mountain huts or walk all day, and the views are spectacular either way.

Wine with the people who make it. From Hofstätter and Gump Hof in South Tyrol to Schiopetto and Radikon in Collio, every tasting is hosted by a family estate. You'll hear the stories behind the bottles from the people who made them.

Three cultures in one valley. Italian, South Tyrolean and Ladin traditions live side by side in the Dolomites. You'll find them in the signposts, the architecture and the food on your plate.

Real mountain food. Kaiserschmarrn on a rifugio terrace, a Ladin dinner in an old farmhouse, Friulian cooking at La Subida. Every meal says something about where you are.

From peaks to vineyards. In a single journey you go from jagged limestone peaks to the gentle, cypress-lined hills of Collio. It's two very different sides of northern Italy.

Harvest season. September brings golden pastures, clear mountain light and vineyards busy with the harvest. It's the most rewarding time to visit both regions.

A winery to call home. End the journey with two nights at Al Pompiere, among Schiopetto's vineyards. The cellar is a short walk from your room.
