Kita-Karuizawa

Wild & Free: Learning from Nature

A five-day immersive escape designed for families to learn, play, and reconnect with nature. Nestled in the serene forests of Kita-Karuizawa, this experience invites both adults and children to explore the outdoors through hands-on activities that engage the senses, spark curiosity, and inspire a love for the natural world.

From fire-starting and cooking over an open flame to creating forest art and discovering micro-creatures up close, every day is filled with opportunities to observe, create, and experience nature in a whole new way. Parents and children bond over shared moments of discovery, whether baking twist bread over a campfire or making their own kaleidoscopes from found materials.

Camp runs 16-20 June. Check into Asama Kuzanbo 15 June, check out 21 June.

Upcoming: 15 – 21 Jun 2025

Key of Private Mountain - a private camp site 1300m above sea level just for Yamayama families

The outdoor activities will be conducted at Key of Private Mountain, a private campsite in Kita Karuizawa, 30 minutes drive from Karuizawa Station. At 1300m above sea level (300m higher than Karuizawa), Key of the Private Mountain enjoys breezy daytime temperatures of about 18 degrees Celsius (5 degrees lower than Karuizawa) in June.

When we visited the campsite in early December, the tranquillity of the surrounding area and the vast expanse of nature left a deep impression. We were also impressed with the modern facilities within the campsite (flush toilet, shower, pantry etc).

Key of Private Mountain is right across from our accommodation at Asama Kuzanbo. Takes less than 5 minutes on the resort's buggy from villa to campsite.

What We Love About Kita-Karuizawa

Cool summer weather. Escape the summer heat and enjoy 18 degrees celcius day time temperature. Goes down to 12 degrees at night.

Scenic drive from Karuizawa to Asama Kuzanbo. The 30-minute drive from Karuizawa Station to Asama Kuzanbo is one of the most beautiful drives we've done. Play Perfect Days OST en route.

Surrounded by nature. Both the campsite and the accommodation are nestled in the foothills of Mt Asama, with panoramic views of the mountain. Waking up to this view is very special.

Quaint old town. Kita-Karuizawa is a quaint little town that feels like its straight out of an old Japanese movie. Great for photographers.

Easy access to Karuizawa. Asama Kuzanbo is 20 minutes away by car to the cafes, restaurants and the old shopping street of Karuizawa.

Easy access to nature spots. Drive to Kusatsu Onsen, Asama Otaki Falls, Shiraito Falls and Aisai-no-Oka (Hill of Beloved Wife in Tsumagoi).
